Letters to my son- 23 months

As we approach your 2nd birthday, I find myself full of cliche's " it went so fast!", " you're just a baby to me, always!".  I cannot believe you are so big already, and yet I look ahead and see action figure fights, second grades crushes, prom and college all approaching at breakneck speed.

I try to just enjoy you now, the way you are; full of jokes and weird toddler humor. You have refined your sense of humor to include more elaborate set ups and now announce, in case we don't agree, that you are SO FUNNY.  You are, my love, you are so funny; and you are so much more. You've developed all kind of new tricks and sometimes while you are talking to me ( really talking now) I find that I am just staring at the baby parts of you to hang on to your childhood. Your mop of baby curls, your dimples that are always around since you are always smiling, your little 'dad bod', your chubby fingers and newly calloused feet.

You are my little star, my perfect gift.

Toddlerhood with my sweet wild son | Denver Lifestyle Photography

My son is officially a toddler ( maybe that happened when he started walking 9 months ago?) and the house is basically a disaster filled with constant chatter. And I love it.  He breaks about 39473209587 things a day, hits head a minimum of about 10-15 times a day and thinks its HILARIOUS to poke my belly and yell BELLY HA!

I didn't anticipate having such a prankster and since he's also a photographer's kid ( who can't have his face on the internet, oh the agony) he has developed a series of jokes around having his picture taken that while they are very funny the first time, tend to lose their charm after 500 repeats.

Example 1: run as fast as you can towards the camera as soon as you notice mommy has it out.

Example 2: pretend to kiss the camera lens until you accidently get to close and hit your forehead on it.  Then cry a lot.

Example 3: make monster faces with accompanying growls until mommy gives up trying to capture whatever adorable thing was happening right before the camera came out.

Catching actual relaxed and natural moments of exploration is practically the impossible dream at this juncture in our toddlerhood but like anything difficult, it's SO REWARDING when it happens!!

Letters to my Son: 18 months

My sweet son,

A year ago, we were preparing for your finalization; a court date had been set and we had family and friends flying in to witness this most momentous moment in your and our lives. I hadn't really thought about how it would feel, I was just so excited to get it over with and be done with social workers and courts and agencies.

Now, I watch you run around the yard exploring every rock and leaf, listen to your elaborate babble sprinkled with newly learned words, run my fingers through your curls and I think,  ' I cannot imagine a different life' .

You are an adventure of your own, you are different every day and I wish I had a perfect mind to record every single thing.  You sing songs now ( really just Hello by Adele and the goodbye song from gymnastics), you love to sort things into piles and build mixing bowl towers while I prepare dinner. You adore food and have the most amazing palate; fearlessly devouring Indian and octopus with the same enthusiasm.

You have friends now and while your play with them is still mostly side by side, it is awesome to imagine what the pathway of your friendships will look like.

Ever in my heart, you are a constant discovery. You are my greatest gift, I will never stop being thankful.
